Bucs Sign Jameis Winston To 4-Year-Deal

Bucs Sign Jameis Winston To 4-Year-Deal

— In the moments after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made Jameis Winston the first pick in the draft Thursday night, the team agreed to terms on a contract with the quarterback.

Then, on Friday, the team officially signed Winston. The four-year deal is worth $25.35 million, which includes a $16.69 million signing bonus, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The entire deal is guaranteed under the league’s collective-bargaining agreement. The contract also contains a fifth-year option that is standard in rookie contract for first-round picks.

“It shows us that he wants us as much as we wanted him,” general manager Jason Licht said.

Licht said the team wanted to get the contract out of the way as soon as possible.

“It’s something we wanted to do,” Licht said. “And it was something where they had no reluctancy either. It was fairly smooth. We wanted Jameis to start off on the right foot. There’s no reason to punish Jameis. He’s going to be treated contractually in terms of money just like any other first overall pick.”

Winston is the second quarterback the Bucs have taken with the No. 1 overall pick. Vinny Testaverde was the other in 1987.

“I’m glad we got the contract stuff out of the way,” Winston said. “I’m just looking forward to getting with the team. We’ve got some great teammates and I’m looking forward to working with the coaching staff. Just playing some football. This whole thing has been long for me. But football is what I’m here for and I can’t wait.”

Floyd Mayweather stays unbeaten with tough split decision

Floyd Mayweather stays unbeaten with tough split decision

LAS VEGAS — Boxing’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter Floyd Mayweather encountered one of his toughest fights but managed to hang on Saturday night and gain a split decision against Marcos Maidana to become the WBA and WBC welterweight champion of the world.

“It was a tough fight, which is what the fans wanted to see,” said the unbeaten Mayweather.

Judge Michael Pernick scored it 114-114, a draw. Bert Clements had it 117-111 and Dave Moretti score it 116-112 for Mayweather. The announcement was met by boos from some of the crowd. Maidana’s camp had been so excited at the end that his handlers carried him around on their shoulders.

“If the fans want to see it again, let’s do it again,” Mayweather said.

Said Maidana, “I have to give him a rematch, because I won.”

Mayweather is now 46-0 with 26 KOs, while Maidana falls to 35-4 with 31 KOs.

Miami Heat Honored by President Barack Obama at White House Tuesday

Miami Heat Honored by President Barack Obama at White House Tuesday

The Miami Heat was welcomed back to the White House by President Barack Obama for a second straight year Tuesday as they celebrated their 2013 NBA championship.

“This group has now won twice, but it’s gone to the Finals three times, and sometimes it feels like they’re still fighting for a little respect,” Obama said. “I can relate to that.”

He recounted their accomplishments, including Ray Allen’s game-tying 3-pointer in Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

“And with five seconds left, Chris Bosh gets an incredible offensive rebound, passes it out to Ray, Ray is backing up, he’s got to jump forward. Hits one of the most iconic shots of all time,” Obama said.

The team met with President Obama Tuesday afternoon, and they also visited with wounded warriors from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

“The Heat showed us the kind of heart and determination it takes to be a champion,” Obama said. “They also showed what heart means off the court.”
